On behalf of the Arizona Black Bar (ABB) and Los Abogados, Arizona’s Hispanic Bar Association, we are honored to invite you to a Law Day celebration recognizing the historic appointment of the Honorable Maria Elena Cruz to the Arizona Supreme Court. As the first Latina, and the first person of African descent to serve on our state’s highest court, Justice Cruz’s appointment marks a significant milestone in ensuring our judiciary reflects the rich diversity of Arizona.
We’re not guests in this profession. We’re here because generations of abogados and abogadas helped build the house—and when they were done, they didn’t shut the door behind them. They left it open because they knew we were coming.
And now it’s our job to preserve their stories. Because if we don’t, no one else will.
On May 31, we’ll gather for Historical Night—a tribute to those who laid the foundation, to those who made headlines, and to those who made history without ever being named.
This is a tribute to their aguante—the grit to keep showing up, the strength to fight, often at great personal cost, and the quiet conviction that someday we’d walk through the doors they held open.
Now, we get to decide how we remember them.
Join the Historical Committee and help shape what this night becomes. Have a say in the stories we highlight, the faces we honor, and the moments we remember. This is a chance to ensure our history is told with the care and depth it deserves.
You don’t need to be an artist or a historian. You just need to show up—like they did.
If you’ve been carrying the feeling that more needs to be done, let’s put it to work. Join us!
